Its sad that you can't categorize the content and select different templates for it.
There is also no WYSIWYG editor.

Having looked at Drupal, Joomla, ModX, Harabi and others - JAWS to me was easy to use, stable, very easy to administer, nice to look at and clearly laid out. Downsides - lack of plug-ins, and (unless I've missed something) ACL's to things like Bloggs and just general 'user' management/authorization.
Posted By: Mark on May 24 2009 10:49 pm
This is a really good CMS, which is languishing in popularity a bit because A) there's so little documentation, and B) there are so few templates.
The layout interface beats Joomla hands down. Just drag and drop a gadget where you want to see it. It's just so easy to get a site up and running quickly.
My top wish list items are:
A "donate" gadget which integrates with PayPal and Google Checkout, with callback functionality which keeps track of who paid what.
It would be great if it were possible to easily add fields to user-registration screen.
The launcher gadget seems pretty powerful and easy to use, but the dearth of documentation makes it hard to figure out how to use Jaws variables, classes and methods inside your script.

I've tested Joomla, Drupal and several others. I may have been convinced by the number of addons and templates, but for the ease of use ... they were far from intuitive.
Jaws IS intuitive and efficient. Just choose a template, choose what gadgets you need (blog, user panel, chat, menus, ...), drag them on the template areas (yes ! in the frontend !), and you're ready to write your content.
I just wish the community to create more templates and gadgets (but it's not bad for a beginning !)

Jaws is awesome, except for one thing: DOCUMENTATION.
It has none (actually it has a bit, but 90% of it makes no sense)
Please, Jaws devs, update the docs! What's the use of writing an awesome CMS if you don't provide the tools for other programmers to extend it?
For third-party devs, I hope you're a PHP wizard who doesn't need docs.
For normal users, this is a great CMS.

I love this script! BUT
1. It needs a users forum..desperately
2. It needs better and complete documentation.
Version 7.3 has swatted many annoying bugs too.
If you need a CMS that is easy to use and will do most 'average' sites then Jaws deserves a good look.

I really want to tinker with this. The admin interface is bright & clean. I like how non-intimidating their website and set up is. Immediate downsides: imcomplete documentation, lack of templating (that I can see). And I also wish they had a Forum. It's crazy that developers of all script types--to this day--still don't have them. Especially with incomplete documentation. That's just crazy on all kinds of levels. And half their showcase sites are down or cybersquatted.
Heh. Reading over this it looks like I don't like it at all. Actually, if I didn't like it, I wouldn't care about writing this. I wish them luck and a long lived CMS.
Posted By: Xander on March 9 2007 10:55 am
Ive managed several CMS systems over the years, and I have to say that this one has great potential - user management could do with improvement tho. Also, Jaws really need a forum on their website!
Posted By: sprocket on September 10 2006 10:52 am
Hope there is an update soon...this great CMS should keep moving ahead.
Posted By: sprocket on July 12 2006 01:02 am
To Tom the previous post.
In have no idea why you have it in for javascript. I don't think I have used a CMS in the last year that does not use javascript somewhere in the app.
Jaws is great and uses javascript very well, however it did have some early difficulties with Mac browsers which is fixed now. With the increase in popularity of AJAX and other frameworks, DOM etc. Javascript has taken on new and very important roles.
If you are running around the internet with javascript turned off, I suggest you turn it on. You might find sites operate a bit better!
Posted By: Tom on July 4 2006 09:24 am
Jaws works well, but I had a few problems with it. First off, the admin interface doesn't work without JavaScript. The people who created Jaws obviously had never heard of accessibility. You need JavaScript to do anything useful with it. Secondly, for the most part the markup is atrocious. It's fairly easy to set up, but not as easy to hack as they seem to think. You have to follow a long trail of methods through several files and constantly reference other ones just to find the one thing you want to change. Then you find out the same action is performed elsewhere and you have to find that too. In short, I would recommend Jaws, just not for non-technical users.
Posted By: csmall on June 9 2006 05:32 am
that was a bug with the initial upload of the new version. it was fixed like minutes later. download it now and try. it will work fine.
Posted By: David on May 19 2006 06:41 am
It wouldn't install for me. Waited a very long time for it to upload, ran the installer... but it kept returning me to the installer's frontpage. No errors or anything. They seriously need a forum...
Posted By: Chris Brant on May 1 2006 08:26 am
Jaws is as user friendly as it gets! The framework is lightweight and reuses well developed code from PEAR and beautiful icons from the Tango Project.
The admin interface is clean and logically designed. Use of AJAX is not overdone and works almost flawlessly on IE 6 and FF 1.5.
Templates are relatively flexible and easy to customize. I would have preferred the use of Smarty here but cant complain too much about the chosen implementation.
Jaws is ideal for basic Blog / CMS solutions. I look forward to seeing new features and flexibility as this project matures.
Posted By: EvilSwed on May 1 2006 03:01 am
Well i simply can't install Jaws :S. If duds who work with Jaws read this, please, please, please and please... throw in a forum at your homepage, where we less fortunate can ask questions!
Posted By: Rafmeister on April 26 2006 02:33 am
Errr, is it just me or is the admin in Chinese or something??
Posted By: Snailer on April 21 2006 05:16 am
It looks great and ahs potential, however;
What are the benitfits of ACL, when I am unable to restrict the rights of the anonymous visitor?!
Does anyone know by chance if this is posseble?
(I like to hide some gadets etc)
Posted By: Kevin McKeown on April 20 2006 10:15 am
This looks very good indeed. Like the 'Gadgets' paradigm. May even replace a Plone site with it. Only real problem is that some features of the admin interface (e.g. Menus) don't work properly with M$ IE, Mozilla is fine though so I guess it's not a problem at all :)
Posted By: Mark on April 17 2006 11:15 am
Wow. This has by far the best admin interface that I've seen. I've spent 10 minutes just admiring the icons!
I agree with other comments that it looks quite a like a blog, but the layout can be changed to reflect a more 'traditional' design.
Posted By: sprocket on April 16 2006 07:47 am
I think I can safely say that this is one of the first 'next generation' CMSs. Jaws is extremely intuitive to use and set-up. We did experience a bit of a problem setting it up with the default MySQL 4.13 database setting on a Mac. Just select the plain MySQL setting from the database menu and you will have no problem.
I particularly like the way plug-ins (called Gadgets) are handled and there is quite a bit of power under the hood. Spam filters are novel and seem to work very well. As third party developers get hold of this you will see many special gadgets follow in the next few months, but the defaults are fairly complete for 90% of what you will need, even has a weather report gadget.
There is plenty to tweak here too and the developers have taken a sensible middle road about settings. You are not overwhelmed with pages of tweaks, but rather there is just enough to configure the site the way you want.
Great icon graphics in the admin, but the templates are only utilitarian at the moment. This should change rapidly as people start to see how great this CMS really is!

I can't really find any template section.

I'm just a few days before giving a few CMS-ses a good test. I tried some demos here before, but after a good few clicks (which of course took a very minimal amount of time) I didn't really see any concept in any one of them. Jaws was surprisingly clear from the start. Of course it has a lot of bugs, but it is quite new. I'd say give it a few months and jaws will fly like a bird :)

Posted By: csmall on March 31 2006 03:20 am
I have been using open source cms's for many years. I have honestly tried almost all of the ones listed on this site. Jaws is different. It is not perfect by any stretch. It is however one of the most pleasant cms's I have ever used. I think the project is definetly headed in the right direction. Out of the other choices listed on this site, I have decided to give jaws most of my attention. The other cms's listed on this site always make me so happy in one area and so dissapointed in others, forcing me to switch or accept the shorts. Jaws has not put me in that position, yet. So far I am happy with all aspects of this cms. One complaint I will voice though is in regards to the IRC channel. I have joined the channel multiple times and not once have I seen anyone chatting or had anyone respond to my questions or greetings. Aside from that, Jaws is an awseome cms!!!!
Posted By: Simply Calous on March 30 2006 12:20 pm
Well, I've used jaws on several sites, and have nothing but love for it. I'm currently looking into giving up cash rewards for certain items I would like to see added into it.

It's got a great interface and some very flexible functionality however my oldsite ran on it and was hacked several times. I trust security issues are now fixed but it still isn't without issues. I look forward to next release.
Official Jaws Forum ready for use at address [forum.jaws-project.com]
When is the ETA for JawsForum to go back online? I love Jaws, its very clean and simple. But I do agree that a community forum will greatly help the project.
This is a forum for Jaws CMS, feel free to join, Cheers! [jawsforum.com]
I love this script! BUT 1. It needs a users forum..desperately 2. It needs better and complete documentation. Version 7.3 has swatted many annoying bugs too. If you need a CMS that is easy to use and will do most 'average' sites then Jaws deserves a good look. ~chris
A new bugfix version has been released: 0.7.1, checkout: http://www.jaws-project.com/index.php?blog/show/34
Well, we've released our 0.7.0 version, if anyone knows how to update this page that would be great.
Ive managed several CMS systems over the years, and I have to say that this one has great potential - user management could do with improvement tho. Also, Jaws really need a forum on their website!
Hope there is an update soon...this great CMS should keep moving ahead.
In short, I would recommend Jaws, just not for non-technical users.
that was a bug with the initial upload of the new version. it was fixed like minutes later. download it now and try. it will work fine.
It wouldn't install for me. Waited a very long time for it to upload, ran the installer... but it kept returning me to the installer's frontpage. No errors or anything. They seriously need a forum...
Well i simply can't install Jaws :S. If duds who work with Jaws read this, please, please, please and please... throw in a forum at your homepage, where we less fortunate can ask questions!
Errr, is it just me or is the admin in Chinese or something??
It looks great and ahs potential, however; What are the benitfits of ACL, when I am unable to restrict the rights of the anonymous visitor?! Does anyone know by chance if this is posseble? (I like to hide some gadets etc)
This looks very good indeed. Like the 'Gadgets' paradigm. May even replace a Plone site with it. Only real problem is that some features of the admin interface (e.g. Menus) don't work properly with M$ IE, Mozilla is fine though so I guess it's not a problem at all :)
Wow. This has by far the best admin interface that I've seen. I've spent 10 minutes just admiring the icons! I agree with other comments that it looks quite a like a blog, but the layout can be changed to reflect a more 'traditional' design.
Yep yep yep I think i love it, and i wanted to taste it on my computer with easyphp but i don't really know how to install it. Don't understant how to install the pach tar.gz
A very nice CMS. Though at the moment I see it more as a blog with a few additional features.
Well, I've used jaws on several sites, and have nothing but love for it. I'm currently looking into giving up cash rewards for certain items I would like to see added into it.
Not sure about ya'll, but I tried to give this one a chance... There are ALOT of errors still... Just log onto the demo as admin and select blocks or prefrences... You'll see the errors and the functions don't work... I thought it was me
