I dislike phpBB 3. I found that it was far to complicated to use when you just pick it up. Far more complicated when you come from phpBB 2. It's far to complicated to install mods. If you are a beginner, I do not recommend it. I recommend MyBB over phpbb 3. Only thing phpBB 3 has going for it, in my opinion, is a large mod database and community.

Was weighing up differences between phpBB3 and SMF. Decided on phpBB3 because it looked nicer. Install seemed slick.

I was about to declare victory when I ran into the 1-year old "re-authenticate forever" bug which phpBB seem to think doesn't exist, despite Google being swamped with evidence. Took me a few minutes to confirm that being a proxy server is the problem (particularly ones that fan out requests across IP addresses).

So, if you don't mind shutting out most corporate users and many people behind ISP proxies, then this is for you. But if you don't want to piss anyone off, then avoid at all costs.

My main concern about PHPBB, is the fact it send back
password and id at the registration time. This can
drive to trouble water for users who don't take care of their password and sometime use the same password on all their Internet business. After discussion on PHPBB board, the only solution to this issue was to have each Forum owner to alter the registration templates.

Not even better than SMF/MYBB. Time consuming to install mods, and a spambot target if you don't update it. However it has a great support from the community, they are nice and helpful.

I've been using phpBB for many years as my forum of choice for various clients, and I don't intend to change which is a recommendation in itself. My clients have been very happy with it and say that it is easy to use and administer. It is also easy to implement your own design. However, it is commonly targeted by spammers and hackers, so it is very important to install the security fixes when they become available. So you can't just install it and think there's no maintenance other than administering the boards.

Great forum, I dont see any negative comments which is true. They have great support in the rare case you find you need help. Running Phpbb3 and Joomla 1.5 integrated no problems A++

I must say I love phpbb it's my favorite forum. The biggest reason being that the other good ones aren't completly open source and have custom licenses. Also the new phpbb3 is a lot better than phpbb2.

Just recently started using PHPBB to setup a new football forum. It is so easy to use and I love all the skins and plugins you can get. I have recently added embedded news feeder to display the latest sport.

Some of my sites are based on PHPBB. it's a nice free PHP forum script, but still have many bugs need to be fixed. Hope 3.0 can give us a fresh feeling.

There is no doubt that phpbb is the best open source forum. Adding new mods to phpbb is slight difficult, but if you use easy mod then your job becomes much easier. Also a large number of attractive templates are available on the internet. If you want to develop a community site then I must recommend to use phpbb as your forum.

I've been using phpBB for almost a year now. I'm not a programmer, but I know just enough to be dangerous! The support is great, lots of advice on how to customize the code.

This is the best forum software available. The only real competitor would be vBulletin, but that one has a fee attached. Since phpBB is open-source, it has many advantages such as that many people help improve it, and that many people know the code and are therefore able to provide guidance. I can't wait till 3.0 gets out of beta!
